MARCO GIOVINO- Friend, Drummer, Producer

I list friend first, because he has been one of my closest since he moved to Nashville six years ago. We met one day via some business he had with a friend of mine, and bonded immediately over “flasks.” I had just driven all the way from Austin, and confided in him that the last hour of long trips I sip from my flask to ease the pain- He loved that! Marco is a man who enjoys fine liquors, wines, foods, but mostly music. I’ve rarely met anyone as passionate or opinionated about music.

Born in Boston, Ma., he moved as a young adult to Spanish Harlem NYC,  where he lived for years, making a humble living doing what he loves to do most: Drum.

During that time he played live or recorded with such luminaries as John Cale (Velvet Underground), and G.E. Smith (SNL band) He scored the drums and percussion for several plays, and worked off Broadway in the house band of Always....Patsy Cline.

Since he moved to Nashville six years ago he’s played and recorded with some amazing folks such as Lee AnnWomack, ( On a Tribute to Loretta Lynn),  Rodney Crowell, Patty Griffin, The Amazing Rhythm Aces,  Norah Jones  and of course,  his main gig  with Robert Plant’s Band of Joy.  All the while, he has kept a finger on the local pool of indie and unknown talents, and played many a night at East Nashville’s funky Watering hole The Family Wash. I love that Marco is not a “fame snob” and will continue to play and work with the underdogs he believes in. ‘’

No one else sounds quite like him on the drums. He understands songs, ( he also writes and has been recorded) and the dying art form known as the album. He produced several albums before mine…notably, his wife Kylie Harris’s second album Love, Lessons, and Lies, ( Fuzzy Feet Records) which got heaps of praise from the elite critical community.

Marco lives in East Nashville where he’s built a little oasis ( Dagotown Recorders) for recording and producing music as he hears it, He recently worked with Deborah Bonham on her upcoming album. He’s a man of unique opinions, and convictions he would die for.  It was one of the easiest decisions of my musical life, to work with him on Beautiful and Wild. - Oh and yes we sipped our flask all the way though.
